my daily practice

photo: jetheriot

This double-sided bookmark is a tool for cultivating peacefulness. Based on enduring principles of rehabilitation such as repetition and incentivization, the design provides a framework for identifying a daily peaceful practice and keeping track of your progress in meeting this goal.

Say, for example, you would like to meditate more. Maybe you meditate sporadically, once or twice a week, and would like to be more consistent in your practice. On the back of the bookmark, you write, “This week I will meditate for 5 minutes each day.” When your daily goal is met – You must use a timer! – transfer a smiley-face sticker from the sticker strip to the letter on the front of the bookmark corresponding to that day. The sticker application provides positive reinforcement. If the daily goal is met for seven out of seven days, the entire strip turns yellow with smiles. The next week starts with a new strip of stickers and a fresh bookmark. The user may adjust the level of difficulty by extending the practice time for the new week.

Q: What are some other examples, besides meditation, of daily peaceful practices?
A: Progressive relaxation, breath awareness, mindful tea drinking, listening to birdsong, enjoying the silence.

Q: Why does the week start with T and end with W?
A: I teach a Peaceful Habits class on Thursday mornings, and I use this as a homework assignment for the week.

Q: Can you start in the middle of the week?
A: Yes, start where you are.
